The joy of running on country roads and trails again – and a great Argentinian gift from our friends

Oh the joy of running on dirt again!

Maybe this is the last of my running on Ruta 7! Today I ran the 1st kilometer on the main road, then took a dirt road leading me to a country road parallel to Ruta 7. How great it felt! I was on my own again. No trucks or cars to worry about, just the singing of the birds and the sand / mud under my feet. The landscapes are changing too – I’m seeing more trees, more rivers, less swamps.

Cows bathing in the river

Running north of Ruta 7 meant I passed by small villages on the way. Vedia, Leandro Alem. Small towns sure, but it felt a lot more “human” than my people-less runs on Ruta 7! I was very pleased with how the day unfolded. I spotted some cows bathing in the river, many wild horses roaming free in the vast plains. It felt like I was seeing a different facet of Argentina.

A mate cup – gifted by JuAnaB, Lucia & Jimena

This morning before we left San Gregorio to commute to our start point, we discovered a little present left by the staff at JuAnaB (the restaurant which was our local for the past 3 days). They gifted us a Mate cup or “calabash gourd” with a “bombilla”, a metallic drinking straw with a sieving end. This is what they use in Argentina to drink the Mate, an infusion drink of “yerba mate leaves” dried or chopped. We were so pleased to find this little gift, another very precious souvenir gathered on the roads of the world-run…!
