Back on the road under perfect weather conditions for a good run on Carnival day

A perfect morning

The rain of the previous night and day has done a good job clearing out the very high humidity. The air was clear and crisp as I left early this morning, it felt really good. Half an hour into my run, I was met by a car driven by Herman and some of the staff of the restaurant JuAnaB. They had gotten up early just to meet me and give some encouragement, how sweet. Yesterday when we returned, they had cooked us some fish from the lagoon and we met all the kitchen staff who also wanted a picture with us. We enjoyed our stay at San Gregorio!

I kept running along Ruta 7 and I was very happy that there was a hard shoulder for the first 20 kilometers or so. I felt much more safe and did not have to worry about traffic. Then as it disappeared again, I was surprised how little traffic there was. Today and tomorrow is “Carnival” in Argentina, a public holiday. It’s held every year in the days leading to Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of the lent. Though it is quite festive in the big cities and notably Buenos Aires, it was rather quiet in the country.

I finished my run in the middle of nowhere, between Diego de Alvear/ San Gregorio and Junin. The place is marked “E. B. Perkins” on Google Maps and that’s how I have registered the finish point. I wondered for a while if it was connected with Perkins Engines, but apparently it is named after Edmundo Banbury Perkins (an the local train station too) and I could not find a connection to anything else! So as of now, the mystery of the name of this place remains.
