Day 624 – South America – Chile [Concepcion to Lirquen]

05/01/22

40km

From Concepcion (Chile) to Lirquen (Chile)

South America

A countryside run not far away from the sea – on busy roads

Biobio River

I started the run with the idea to run around Concepcion, as opposed to through it. I was afraid that the morning traffic would be too much, especially in the narrow and winding roads of the busy city. I chose to go west-north towards Talcahuano, where I thought I would really get to see the ocean. On my way I crossed the Biobio River at its mouth, it was very wide and beautiful in the morning light.

All kind of transports on the Highway

Talcahuano is quite an industrial place as it turns out. Factories everywhere, trucks traffic. Not what I thought I would find! I kept running nonetheless and headed out to the portuary road towards Penco-Lirquen, where I was set to meet with James at the end of the run. But it turned out the road I was on was a motorway – not allowed to pedestrians or bikes! I kept running on it anyway, seeing as there was almost no traffic and I had a wide hard shoulder to run on.

Views of the ocean by Penco

I was greeted by views of the ocean. I love running by a body of water. My European crossing was planned to run almost continuously by the sea, from the west coast of Portugal to Istanbul (Covid slightly changed my plans..!). My North-American crossing was all inland, only following rivers here and there. Hopefully we’ll be near the ocean all the way north to Valparaiso. What a treat! The run today ended in Lirquen (industrial) next to the town of Penco (more of a beachside place). We drove to Tome for the night, a much bigger city and a holiday destination for the locals.
