Day 619 – South America – Chile [Angol to Nacimiento]

31/12/21

40km

From Angol (Chile) to Nacimiento (Chile)

South America

Happy New Year everyone! The last run of 2021 is completed – on to a new year, hopefully the last one fo the world-run!

Elephant hat and a lion… that must be Africa!

I ran along the same route today. Country road, narrow shoulder, lots of trucks on the road. As I left Angol, I ran through Plaza de Armas, where stands a beautiful fountain. Each corner is adorned by a statue of a woman, each representing “the 4 continents” (must have been before all 7 were discovered!): Europe, America, Africa, Asia. There was a beautiful Japanese Cedar tree too, giving the area some shade and making it quite cool and nice.

Mapuche wooden sculpture

A quick run through town, past some Mapuche wooden sculpture – and then I was on the main road. I don’t mind so much. When you’ve run on the roadside for 2 years, you become quite oblivious to the noise and disruption of traffic. I still am very alert, but it simply doesn’t bother me. I see the beauty of my environment, hear the birds and the wind in the trees… whenever traffic is lighter!

Quite pleased to finish the last run of 2021!

I finished the run at the entry of Nacimiento. Due to the lack of accomodation in the area, we drove over to Los Angeles to spend the rest day there. Similarly to Xmas day in Villarica last week, all the restaurants were closed. We were prepared and had enough food reserves to cook a great meal – and a nice bottle of local Chilean wine to go with. Los Angeles is a very rural agricultural town, not exactly the hustle and bustle of big cities! I did not see any fireworks…

2021 has been a good year for the world-run. I finished the European crossing, completed the North America crossing and started the South America one. Not bad! I ran 12,200km and only had one interruption: the 18 days vacation between North-America and South-America (which was supposed to be 1 week long – only to turn out much longer due to missed flights and Covid restrictions). So all in all, in the perspective of the world-run, 2021 was a year with good progress.

Let’s hope 2022 will be a good one and that I will get to be able to make it across South America and into Australia – that would be a nice way to conclude the journey… and remain under the 3-years mark!
