Election day in Chile, a countryside run and some Google Maps misfortunes

2021 Presidential Elections in Chile

This Sunday is the second round of the presidential election in Chile. The choice is between a 35 years-old leftist and a 55 years-old admirer of Pinochet. Quite a radical choice Chileans have to make today. Let’s hope they’ll choose what’s best for their country and show that they’ve learnt a lesson or two about recent history. Results later on tonight, the sound of the klaxons and the procession of cars in the streets will surely be the tell-tale signs.

Going over closed gates in the countryside

Today’s run started off on country roads. And soon was marred by Google Maps inaccuracies. I was sent onto a path that kept getting more rugged and rugged. Then I encountered a closed gate which I decided to climb over (thanks god for not having to run with the stroller these days). Two more closed gates followed as well as unkempt grassy vegetation up to my waist! I was not sure where I was headed and that is also the time my internet coverage dropped – I really was in a no man’s land.

Perplexed with my first “Mote Con Huesillos”

I made it back to the road that led to San Pablo, on the way to Rio Bueno. There I was met by James on his bike. Just as well, he relieved me of my Camelbak that was starting to cause chaffing on my back. I need to apply some sort of vaseline in the coming days. We stopped by at the local Sunday market and tasted our first “Mote Con huesillos”: a chewy and sweet traditional snack made with a husked wheat (“mote”) served in a syrupy liquid with a confit peach (huesillos).

The scenery today

Tonight we stay in Rio Bueno, set on the river of the same name – apparently one of the best rivers to fish in the region.
