From Frutillar (Chile) to Purranque (Chile)

South America

Back to standard distances on a sunny day in the countryside of Chile’s Lake district

Quiet country road, chilly and overcast morning

The day started out quite chilly and overcast. It’s usually about 10 Celsius as I leave in the morning. By 10am or 11am the sky clears up and it gets warmer, progressively, to around 20-25 Celsius.

I started out on a quiet country road. Right and left, the country is pretty much untouched. Here and there are a few fields with cows or horses, roaming freely. Very few agricultural enterprises. Then after about 21 kilometer of very nicely surfaced road, I hit the “road under construction” again! My shoes are not really fit for that terrain, and I feel my feet have been given a serious beating over the past 4 days. Today, the sole of my feet hurt a bit! I took it slowly and walked some segments as there was a lot of loose stones everywhere and I couldn’t get a steady rhythm.

Smelling the flowers

That gave me more time to enjoy my surroundings, smell the flower and be greeted by the local dogs. There are lots of dogs around here, strays and domesticated alike. All are very friendly and seem quite well taken care of. I also notice I have not seen one road-kill since I started the run. That tells something about how people look out for the animals, and also about their driving. I find the drivers very cautious and respectful so far. I hope it stays the same for the whole crossing!

Finishing the run in style, dipping toes in Lake Llanquihue

The run ended a few km south of Purranque, a small place called Corte Alto. We then went on a drive around Lake Llanquihue again, this time visiting Puerto Octay. It’s striking that there are no resorts here. Everything is very well preserved, very wild, kept untouched. There were a few people down the lake, swimming, with that beautiful view of the volcanoes and Andes in the background…
