Day 593 – US – Maryland/ Delaware [Elkton to Wilmington]

18/11/21

32km

From Elkton (Maryland) to Wilmington (Delaware)

North America

Crossing into the 12th state of the North American run, Delaware – on a beautiful warm sunny day

Some of the nicest suburbs I ran through today

Delaware being the second smallest state of the country (2nd only to Rhode Island) I will only get to stay one day in the state – and I’ll be out of it tomorrow when I reach Philadelphia. Wilmington is the biggest city of the state, and as usual when coming in or out of a big city, I have to run through the leafy suburbs and the less nice suburbs. I get to see poverty, the aimlessness, alcohol consumption early in the morning, syringes on the ground, broken down pavements and overgrown grass everywhere, shabby houses… It’s safe for me to run through – as always, running with a stroller seems to constitute a universal taboo and I am never in trouble.

Reaching Wilmington, Delaware

The weather was incredibly clement. Lower 20’s (Celsius), sunny and bright blue skies. Yet tomorrow is a dip of 15 degrees, as it will remain between 0 and 5 all day. I have not known such radical variations of temperatures in the world-run so far. Autumn on the east coast is quite a gamble! All in all I am being very lucky with the weather, and I am only expecting 3 days of bad weather before I reach NYC.

A bit of trivia here as Wilmington is the hometown of Joe & Jill Biden, the presidential couple.
