Europe

Another day on the Costa Azahar – and I eventually get to learn what it means!

The past few days I have mentioned running amongst orange orchards. Well today, as I read about the Costa Azahar – the Spanish Coast I’m running on – I learn that it literally translates into Spain’s “Orange Blossom Coast”. It’s about time I learn a bit about the region I’m crossing! So, should I even mention today, that I ran around fields of orange trees..?!

Today’s run was another serene run, as all runs sheltered from traffic are. Leaving Castello, I headed towards Benicassim and the seaside promenade. Sunday morning crowds of runners, cyclists and dog walkers. Then, as I was ready (resigned) to join the National Road again, I came across the “Via Verde” or green-way / green corridor.

A very beautiful pedestrian road sculpted on the coast, overlooking the sea and the town of Benicassim. There were a few scary moments (for me) as I had to go under some man-made tunnels, very humid, with a structure that seemed quite gravity-defying. I don’t do very well under tunnels in general, some sort of claustrophobia I reckon! Anyway, I soldiered on and ran through the very humid structure. I am pretty sure I ran most of it whilst holding my breath!

Once this was over, I got onto some Camino Rural again, happily avoiding the National Road. I didn’t encounter a car for some 15km or so, only cyclists, walkers. If every day were like today, I don’t think I would ever stop running…!
