Europe

Another rainy day and a beautiful arrival in Amiens, the “little Venice of the North”

I set out before dawn again, and it was drizzling, the wind blowing sheets of thin rain on a cross wind that was to follow me throughout the run today. The landscape changed a bit during my journey, I crossed into the “Somme” region which is slightly more undulating. But it remains a landscape of very green fields as far as the eye can see.

I arrived in Amiens, a beautiful city. It has been dubbed the “Venice of the North” because of the many canals that flow from the Rivers Somme and Arve. Amiens has also gained fame lately for being the hometown of presidential couple Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron.

The cathedral of Amiens is the largest in France, being a World Heritage Site. Jules Verne, author of “Around the World in 80 days” (one of my favorite books) lived in Amiens until his death in 1905. The city is scattered with awesome pieces of architecture and I tried my best to walk all around the place in the very persistent rain. I particularly liked the sight of the Dewailly Clock, quite a sight, bright and modern!
