Short sunny run in the countryside, on Croatia’s Paprika Route

I’m counting my blessings! Today was another superb day on the road, sunny and bright. From what I read on the weather forecasts, it is currently quite cold for the season. The coming days and week should see temperatures go slightly up. It is currently about 5 Celsius as I leave in the morning, after sunrise, and it stings a bit.

Today was a short run, I went easy and took plenty of breaks. I actually took a break every time a cat or dog was sitting in the sun outside their front porch. And there were quite a lot! I am surprised that I get to see a lot less roadkills than usual on the road, despite seeing quite a lot of domesticated animals roaming free in front of their masters’ houses. Anyway I got a lot of cuddles from my four legged animal friends along the road today!

The road I ran on is dubbed the Paprika Route. As I ran by many villages I noticed many households selling vegetables, loads of peppers mostly, on their front porch. I read about the Paprika Route today and it’s a local initiative to develop the farming industry and is backed up by the Ministry of Tourism. I am not sure how they combine tourism and the production of peppers, but all I can say is that it’s a beautiful region and a pleasure to travel through!

I arrived today in Virovitica, a very nice little town with a beautiful 18th century castle. The town is set near the Papuk mountain range (low mountain) which I am crossing tomorrow on my way to Garesnica.
