Europe

A long and flat run in the Slavonia region of Croatia, along the Hungarian border

I woke up this morning to an email from the 5th graders of the French School of Singapore, who had prepared a board of messages for me! We were supposed to have a video call this morning, but it being a longer run today, I did not have the time (there is a 6 hours time difference between Europe and Singapore). We have rescheduled it and it will happen in 10 days. But what an energising surprise to discover their kind and thoughtful messages this morning!

Today’s run was typical of the past few days. A completely flat run in the plains of the Slavonia region. Passing by a string of very pretty villages, all made of individual houses with very large gardens. Wide pedestrian sidewalks. Loads of very friendly cats and dogs. People smiling at me, offering words of encouragement – at least it sounds like it, as “bravo” is an international word I now know. Though the sky was at times menacing, I avoided the rain and it felt just fine.

Tomorrow is a rest-day and I will visit the small town of Donji Miholvac. The town is right next to the Hungarian border, which is marked by the Drava river, a tributary of the Danube. From Osijek (which I left this morning) heading West, the Drava marks the border with Hungary (North of Croatia).

I have quite a lot of work to do tomorrow in terms of planning in detail my journey across Central Europe. I have most of the itinerary worked out, but need to drill down to stage level – and this often is the most tedious time consuming part of the planning (ie: making sure there is a town / accommodation on a 40-50km range, heading in the direction I have planned… tedious!).
