A cold, rainy and windy day on the road, wading through mud and a first encounter with the Danube

What a day! It’s funny that before this week started, I was thinking that the tough part will be to run 3 consecutive 50kms+ days, and that when the 36km day will come, I will get some respite. And it turns out to be quite the opposite! I did not mind the longer distances. But today’s 36kms have been very very hard.

It was windy, very rainy and cold from the start. I headed out all dressed in my waterproof trousers and jacket. I have a problem with these. They make me sweat a lot (and create condensation too) and I end up soaked in my clothes. When the temperature is really cold, it makes it very difficult to keep warm. By km21 I was shivering and my fingers were all numb. I stopped in a roadside shack at the exit of Radinac. I changed into dry clothes and ate a bit in an attempt to warm up.

I thought the remaining 15km to Kovin would feel like a breath. I could not have been more wrong! The rain got stronger and I was on a narrow road, massively used by trucks… with no shoulder. There definitely was no possibility for me and BoB the Stroller to be on that road, as two trucks barely had enough space to cross. I ended up on the grassy shoulder which had been rendered all muddy by the heavy rain. These 15km were so hard, just pushing BoB through, with its wheels getting stuck in the mud and grass constantly.

I only took out my IPhone once, to take one picture. When I crossed the Danube river. This is my first encounter (of the world run) with this river, which I will cross again at least a dozen times in many different countries. See the map I post here (the red line is the Danube, all 2,850km of it). Visibility was low and I could not even get a good picture. I am looking forward to a dry run and better conditions tomorrow for the final 50km into Belgrade!
